What is a residential fire alarm?
It is an active fire protection system that detects smoke or heat and warns the occupants with an alarm or computer voice. A "smoke detector" device that provides earlier detection of fire is generally installed on the ceiling in the living room or stairway. In order to avoid false alarms, a "heat detector" device is ideally installed in the kitchen or other locations where non-fire related smoke may be detectable.
Where to purchase fire alarms
Fire alarms can be purchased at hardware stores, home electronics shops and stores that handle disaster prevention goods. For more detailed information, visit the Tokyo Fire Department Website
Device installation
Residential fire alarms are typically easy to install using screws or hooks to
attach them to home walls or ceilings. There are also shops and companies
that will install the devices for you. If you find the installation difficult, please
inquire about installation options at the point of purchase.
Where should they be installed?
Fire alarms should be installed in all rooms, kitchens and stairways, but those
installed in bathrooms, toilets, restrooms and closets are not subject to
reimbursement.
Why are residential fire alarms necessary?
40 percent of residential fire deaths are attributed to late detection of fire.
Early detection of fires can minimize their damage.
