School Enrollment in April 2009 for Children of Foreign Nationals
Applications for enrollment in municipal elementary and junior high schools for
children of foreign nationals will be accepted starting Wednesday, Oct. 1st at the
School Affairs Section, Secretariat of the Board of Education.
An identification document verifying your child’s address and date of birth, such as a Certificate of
Alien Registration, will be required. The application process is handled in Japanese
only, so please bring someone who can interpret if necessary.
Minato City uses the School Selection System, which allows residents to choose
the public school to which they wish to apply. Related documents and required
forms, including the School Selection Slip, will be mailed to you after your
application, so please apply as early as possible.
The Japanese academic year runs from April to March. Children who were born
between April 2, 2002 and April 1, 2003, are eligible to enroll as first graders in
2009.
School Selection System
In principle, each child is placed in a school according to the school district policy.
However, the Secretariat of the Board of Education of Minato City provides
alternatives by allowing applicants to choose the school they wish to enroll in.
You
may select an elementary school in your neighboring school district, or a junior
high school anywhere in Minato City.
Please be aware, however, that applications to preferred schools are not always
accepted.
Please inquire for more details. Students are expected to commute to
school on foot or by train or bus. Schools prohibit bicycle commuting for safety
reasons.

All municipal elementary and junior high schools will hold open school days as indicated below. Please take these opportunities to learn about the schools’ characteristics and academic content before making your decision.
School guide
Starting in October, school guides will be distributed to parents/guardians of
eligible children via municipal nursery schools, kindergartens and elementary
schools.
They will also be available for viewing at the Secretariat of the Board of
Education at 7F of Minato City Hall, regional city offices, libraries and Jidoukan
children’s halls.

[1] Mita Junior High School is temporarily using the former Shibahama Junior High School building, as the new school building is
currently under construction. The school will be moved to the new location, 4-13-10 Mita in 2009.
[2] Koryo Junior High School is temporarily located at 4-5-28 Minami-Azabu while the school is being renovated. The school will
be returned to the renovated building at 4-14-8 Nishi-Azabu in 2009.
