Be Kind to Animals Week: 9/20 – 9/26
“Be kind to animals week” was established under the Law Concerning the Humane Treatment and
Control of Animals to enhance public interest and understanding regarding the humane treatment and
proper care of animals. We want pet owners to understand the habits and nature of their pets and
continue to raise them with love and take responsibility for them throughout their life.
Good manners when walking dogs
• Clean up after your dog
When walking your dog, always bring a bag and water to clean up after him or her
• Dogs must be kept on a leash
It is very dangerous to let your dog off the leash or let go of the leash in any area other than specially
designated dog runs or other areas where it is explicitly permitted. This is regulated by the Tokyo
Metropolitan Law Concerning the Protection and Control of Animals. For the safety of the dog, it is
important to hold tightly onto the leash.
• Let’s make Minato City a place where dog owners and non-owners can live comfortably.
Be careful of infectious diseases carried by animals
There are diseases that are transmissible from animals to people. Do not maintain excessive contact with
animals.
• Give your pet a thorough shampooing and brushing to maintain its hygiene.
• Do not feed your pet mouth to mouth
• Do not use the same bowls or other containers as the pet
• Always wash your hands after handling pets or their waste
• Clean the pet’s cage or home thoroughly and otherwise keep the pet’s environment clean
Abuse of animals is a crime
The abuse or abandonment of an animal may result in imprisonment or a fine according to the Law
Concerning Humane Treatment and Control of Animals.
If you see abandonment or abuse, please notify the police.
* You must obtain permission to keep special animals designated in government ordinances.
