The third Monday of September is Keiro no hi, Respect-for-Senior Citizens
Day. This is the day to honor senior citizens who have worked for the society
for long time and celebrate their long lives. It is a unique holiday of Japan.
Some families visit their parents/grandparents and spend this day together.
September 23rd is Shubun no hi, Autumnal Equinox Day. It was established as
a national holiday in 1948 for respecting ancestors and commemorating
defunct people.
Many people visit their family grave or cemetery to comfort the spirits and pay
respect to their ancestors at this time. After Autumnal Equinox Day, autumn comes to Japan.
