Safe Bike Riding

To ensure public safety, please follow traffic rules and exercise safe bicycle riding precautions. If you violate the regulations, you can be subject to a fine.

Safety Cycling Rules

  1. Pedal along the carriageway. Pedaling on sidewalks is exceptional. As bicycles are considered light vehicles under Japan’s Road Traffic Law, cyclists are required to pass through carriageways.
  2. Ride on the left side of the road.
  3. Pedestrians always have the priority on sidewalks. Cyclists must go slowly. In case cyclists interfere with pedestrians, they must stop and take the carriageway side.
  4. The following acts are prohibited:
    1. Riding a bike while drinking alcohol
    2. Riding with a passenger, except a child in a child-seat
    3. Cycling in parallel
    4. Riding a bicycle without lights after dark
    5. Using a cell phone, smart phone, or holding an umbrella while cycling
  5. Children under the age of 12 should wear safety helmets when on the bicycle.

Obey all traffic lights and follow all traffic signs and rules. Continually check safety conditions when riding.
