Minato City is Brimming with Hospitality

Improve multilingual services to make you feel more welcome

We are organizing English lessons by native English speakers at stores in Minato City to better inform foreign nationals about Japanese products and services, as well as to give them the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and traditions. The goal is to make foreign people feel more welcome to go to shops and restaurants they usually hesitate to visit.

Interviews with foreign customers

We interviewed foreign nationals. A Peruvian man said, “I feel uncertain because I don’t know Japanese, so I only go to stores introduced by my friends. I would go to some new shops where the clerks speak English as I feel comfortable.” Another man, from France, said, “I’ve lived in Japan for about a decade. I know some Japanese but I don’t understand the detailed explanation, historical or cultural background of the product. If I understand such things, I could enjoy shopping and eating more.”

Do you know about traditional Japanese food?

Do you know about seasonings and ingredients used in Japanese foods, such as mirin used for making teriyaki sauce or dashi soup stock used for miso soup? Foreign customers who aren’t familiar with them sometimes ask about recipes or different ingredients. The city helps restaurant staff handle questions like these. It also tries to give restaurants an understanding of dietary needs due to an allergy, religion or preferences, for example, vegetarian and vegan and halal or kosher dishes.

What stores are participating?

Right now, more than 100 shops are joining in this project. They range from community based izakaya pubs to Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as traditional wagashi sweet shops, shoe stores, liquor shops, barber shops, etc. You may find a store that you are looking for.

Sticker displayed by participating stores

Try visiting a store or restaurant in Minato City where you can experience Japanese hospitality. Just look for the sticker on the storefront. When you find this sticker, feel free to pop in.
