Seasonal News

Wishing for good fortune
February 11th is the Japanese National Foundation day. It was designated as a national holiday by the Japanese government in 1966, to celebrate kigensestu, the day of origin.
February 3rd is Setsubun, the last day of winter. On this day, many people throw roasted soybeans at home, shrines and temples. The custom of mamemaki, throwing soybeans, has the implication of pushing out evil and bringing good fortune.
Recently, eating ehomaki, luck direction roll, on Setsubun has also become popular. Ehomaki is a large sushi roll. It is said that eating ehomaki while facing the auspicious direction of that year will bring good luck. This year’s direction is south-southeast. Ehomaki are sold in many places around this season, so why don’t you give a try this year?
