Four Seasons and the Japanese Food

Japan has four distinct seasons, each with its own unique colors. In spring, the cherry blossom flowers bloom in pastel pink. During the fall, the autumn leaves change its color from green, yellow, red, and crimson. In winter, the landscape is covered in a blanket of pure white snow. These changing seasons are also reflected in Japanese food culture. From April, this column will introduce Wagashi, Japanese sweets, and other food items reflecting Japanese aesthetics, lifestyle, climate, history, and other characteristics composing Japan.

When the cherry blossoms bloom around the end of March through the beginning of April, people go out to enjoy Hanami, cherry blossom viewing. Many people gather and lay down mats on the ground under the cherry trees, to appreciate the arrival of spring and feel the beauty of cherry blossom flowers. They enjoy the atmosphere by singing, dancing, talking and eating bento, Japanese lunch boxes, and Hanami Dango.
Hanami Dango is one of Wagashi, Japanese confectionery. Hanami Dango is formed with three round dunplings colored in pink, white, and green skewered on a stick. Each color represents the seasons of Japan. Pink symbolizes cherry blossom, white as a snow in winter, and green as a growing grass in summer. Wagashi is not just delicious for its taste, but it is a traditional Japanese food culture symbolizing the sensitive colors of each season. Please taste and feel the arrival of spring under the astonishing beautiful cherry blossom trees and Hanami Dango in your hands.
