Minato City History Forum and Walking Tour

“Minato City History Forum” which gives lectures on the theme of diplomacy, and the “Walking Tour” by Minato City Volunteer Tour Guides will be conducted. All of the programs are free of charge.

Minato City History Forum: Diplomacy in the end of Shogunate era

By focusing on the arts of Ukiyo-e and interpretation, this forum traces about the diplomacy and cultures evolved in the Edo period, from 16th to 18th century.

Program

“Language opening the door of the universal world” by speaker Naoki Kimura, professor of Nagasaki University.
“Foreign countries in Japan depicted in the art of Ukiyo-e, woodblock prints of the Floating World” by speaker Mayumi Sugawara, professor of Osaka City University.
The Forum is conducted in Japanese.

September 2, 1:30 to 3:50 p.m.; 5 to 7:20 p.m.

Place

Civic Hall, Akasaka Civic Center, 4-18-13 Akasaka

Capacity

400 people via lottery selection

Application

Please write your address, name, age, phone number, and the time you wish to attend on a postcard, and send it to 100-8502, Tokyo Shimbun Advertising Department, Minato City History Forum by August 13. A ticket will be sent to the elected applicant.

Walking Tour: Explore historic sites of diplomacy in the 18th century

Course

Hiroo Station, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line - Korin-ji Temple, the grave of Heusken, an interpreter of the American legation - Shuntoin Temple, site of the Prussian legation - Zenpukuji Temple, site of the first American legation

Date & time

September 1, 10 a.m. to noon; 3 to 5 p.m.

Eligibility

Elementary school students and over who can walk the whole route including slopes and stairs. The tour is conducted in Japanese.

Capacity

20 people by a lottery

Application

Please apply by August 17. Results will be sent by August 24.
