■ Mayor's Essay

-Looking forward to the New Year—2019 (Heisei 31)-

Happy New Year!It's Masaaki Takei.
I am writing with fond greetings at the start of the new year, 2019 (Heisei 31).

This is a special year when we will begin a new era following Heisei. The Japanese system of naming eras began in the Taika Era of the Asuka Period. There have been 231 eras up to the current Heisei Era.I hope that the next era name to be revealed will bring good tidings of the dreams and aspirations for the next era.

As the new era begins, Japan will host major sporting events, one after another.
In September, the 2019 Rugby World Cup will be held, and then in the following summer, it will finally be time for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 .
To get in the spirit of the Tokyo 2020 Games, Minato City hosted the Minato City Half Marathon 2018 last year on Sunday, December 2.It was the first authentic marathon hosted by Minato City. 4,698 people ran the 21.0975 km half marathon in slightly chilly, 8.5°C weather, and 4,328 (92.1%) of them completed it.There were no major accidents and the event went off without a hitch. This was thanks to the preparations made by the steering committee that worked for over a year, and the over 1,000 volunteers who provided support on the day of the event. There was some inconvenience caused by temporarily limiting traffic, and we are grateful to everyone for their patience and understanding.Thank you very much.

Thursday, January 17 is Disaster Prevention and Volunteer Day.It is a day of remembrance recognized by the Cabinet in honor of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, which occurred 24 years ago on January 7, 1995. The purpose is to deepen awareness of volunteer activities and proactive disaster prevention that citizens can do to enhance disaster preparedness.
The kanji character that represented the state of society last year was 災 (disaster, pronounced “wazawai” or “sai”). The character is unveiled every year by The Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation. Last year had numerous natural disasters requiring much humanitarian support.Volunteering in times of disaster is something that anyone can do, as long as they want to help.I hope that you will actively participate in volunteering as we enter the new year.Minato City will continue to strengthen the organizations that prepare for disasters through support of self-help, cooperation, and public aid.

I sincerely hope that the new year will bring you health and prosperity and wish you a happy New Year.
I hope you will continue to read Kiratto ☆ in the new year.
