■ Mayor's Essay

--Preparing for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020

Hello, this is Masaaki Takei.
The days are getting hotter now.Last month, there were a lot of cloudy and rainy days. Many of you may have made plans because the weather was getting warmer and then had to postpone them.In Amami and Okinawa, the rainy season has started earlier than usual, and in Tokyo it is just about to start.During long periods of heat and humidity, it is easy for germs to spread and there is a higher risk of food poisoning.Stay healthy through the coming hot period by carefully observing these three basic rules for preventing food poisoning: Don’t let germs get on your food, don’t let them spread, and disinfect.

There is a Statue of Liberty in Odaiba. It stands about 12 m tall against the backdrop of the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower and weighs about 9 tons. The statue can be seen from the walking path along the waterfront. The statue was set up over the course of a year starting in April 1998, “France in Japan Year,” and then returned to France. However, there were many people who asked for it return, so, with permission from Paris, a replica was created and put in its place.
Last week, on May 22, we gave a tour of Odaiba, which has this connection to Paris, to the deputy mayor of Paris, Patrick Klugman. The 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Paris, and they plan to hold the swimming portion of the triathlon in the Seine.Minato City will also host the triathlon competition, so we decided to cooperate with Paris and sign a partnership agreement on waterfront usage so that the cities can achieve a swimmable ocean in Odaiba and a swimmable Seine in Paris.
As a first step in this partnership this year, we will revamp the Odaiba Ocean Swimming event, held every summer. The Paris-Plage (“plage” means “beach” in French) is a common summer sight along the Seine. We will recreate this atmosphere with our “Odaiba-Plage” over the course of nine days from Saturday, July 28 to Sunday, August 5. We will set up Parisian parasols and wooden chairs and attractions for children to enjoy in the water. I hope you look forward to it!

In addition to these efforts at Odaiba, we will hold the MINATO City Half Marathon 2018—the first in Minato City—on Sunday, December 2 in preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Games in two years. The proposed course was recently decided upon and runs mainly across the eastern part of Minato City. We will soon begin recruiting runners for the half marathon (21.0975 km) and the fun run (about 1.5 km).Minato City aims to create a coexisting local society through sports for everyone, from children to seniors, regardless of nationality or whether they have a disability. We hope that many people will apply and join in the spirit of the competition, with everyone in Minato City coming together, from those who live here to organizations and companies that work here.

The day after tomorrow, June 3, is “Minato City Safety Day.” As a result of an accident in an elevator in Minato City municipal housing on June 3, 2006, a 16-year-old passed away.Twelve years have passed since the accident, but Minato City is committed to not letting the accident be forgotten and to enhancing safety measures in municipal buildings, including elevators. We hope that everyone in Minato City will take the opportunity every June 3 to think about the safety of facilities and equipment close to them.
