■ Mayor's Essay

--The start of the Reiwa Era, a new era brimming with hope

Hello, this is Masaaki Takei.

Starting today, Japanese years will be counted as part of the Reiwa Era. I hope for the continued building of the rich society that we had in the Heisei Era.
Many of the permits, certificates, and other notifications that you, as citizens and businesses of Minato City, already possess are printed with dates after May 1 that use the Heisei Era notation. Please be assured that these documents are valid, even if they use Heisei Era notation.

The weather in April, the final month of the Heisei Era, was irregular. On Wednesday, April 10, there was 5 cm of snow in the Tama region of Tokyo, and even the downtown areas were as cold as midwinter. Then, last week, on Monday, April 22, there was a record high temperature of 25.6ºC, making it the first summer temperature day of the year. It must have been difficult first pulling your winter coat back out and then taking out your short sleeve shirts early just to go outside. I am curious to see how the weather will be during this year’s 10-day Golden Week.
Some of you are probably taking trips during the holiday, while others are working. Information on Minato City service desks, childcare, medical examinations during the holidays, and more can be found on the Minato City Website and in the April 11 edition of Minato Koho. Please refer to these resources.

Where do you go shopping for your essential daily fresh produce? Starting on Friday, April 26, mobile sales of fruit and vegetables will be available on the grounds of the Aoyama Kitamachi municipal apartments (Kita-aoyama 3-Chome).
In this area, the supermarket that was used by the residents closed at the end of February, and it has been difficult to get access to fresh produce. The current ongoing redevelopment plan in the Kita-aoyama 3-chome area is hoped to attract stores, such as supermarkets, to meet daily needs. However, this will not be achieved for some time. So, the Akasaka Regional City Office is leading efforts to support shopping and, in cooperation with the Tokyo government, is providing mobile sales of these necessities.
The mobile sales will be available every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, and will continue during the 10-day Golden Week holiday.

In last month’s Kiratto e-mail magazine, we discussed the deepening connections between Minato City and Paris through efforts such as the water quality improvements in Odaiba and the Seine. Then, on Monday, April 15, at 6:50 pm local time, a major fire broke out at the Notre Dame Cathedral, a symbol of Paris. We extend our sympathies for the great sadness to the people of Paris and France, caused by the major damage of the collapsing spire and surrounding roof. On Wednesday, April 17, I sent my condolences on behalf of the people of Minato City to the mayor of Paris and to the French ambassador to Japan. Four charity organizations have been started in France to help rebuild the cathedral. I hope you can help contribute to the rebuilding effort.
