4. Let’s prepare for heavy rains during localized downpours as well as typhoons.

In recent years, there has been an increase in “localized downpours”, during which a heavy amount of rain falls locally in a short period of time. Even in the city, there has been major damage such as flooding above floor level due to past localized downpours and typhoons. In order to prevent this kind of damage, preparations must be made on a regular basis.

When heavy rainfall occurs, please pay attention to the following.

(1) Please pay attention to weather and evacuation information.

In the event that heavy rainfall or typhoons are forecasted, please pay attention to the weather advisories and warnings issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The city will issue evacuation information in the event that there is a risk of natural disaster. The evacuation information issued by the city includes “Evacuation Preparation & Starting Evacuation of the Elderly”, “Evacuation Advice”, and “Evacuation Instructions (Emergency)”. To find out more about the meaning of the evacuation information and actions that should be taken, please go to https://www.city.minato.tokyo.jp/bousai/saigaitaisaku/hinanjoho.html. (Japanese)

(2) Make preparations to prevent flooding.

Make preparations to guard against flooding before it occurs, such as working together with neighbors to stockpile sandbags in your neighborhood. Minato City provides sandbags that can be used at any time.

Please take a look at the Minato City Flood Hazard Map. http://www.city.minato.tokyo.jp/dobokukeikaku/bosai-anzen/bosai/shinsui/hazard-map/ (Japanese & English)
