“Bonseki” is the art of using swan and hawk feathers to create landscapes out of stones and sand on black lacquer trays. It is said that the culture of stone appreciation arrived from continental Asia in the 7th century, during the reign of Empress Suiko. The tradition was passed down through people such as Ashikaga Yoshimasa in the Muromachi period, Sen no Rikyu, and Tadaoki Hosokawa, and has developed along with Japan’s unique culture. The quiet time spent working on Bonseki may be exactly what is needed in modern times. We’d like to invite you to spend this quiet time together with us.
