FAQ on Influenza for Senior Citizens

Q1. Can a person born on December 25, 1952, who does not hold a Shintai Shogaisha Techo, Certificate of the Physically Disabled, receive a flu vaccination on November 1, 2017?
A1. No, she/he cannot. Only those aged 65 and older are eligible, so a person born on December 25, 1952 must get her/his flu vaccination on December 24, 2017 or later.

Q2. At which hospitals can the flu vaccination be received?
A2. The flu vaccination can be administered at designated medical institutions in Minato City and the 23 cities of Tokyo. The designated medical institutions in Minato City may be viewed on the list included with the pre-vaccination check sheet. For the 22 cities of Tokyo other than Minato City, please contact each city’s health center or the medical institution directly.

Q3. I lost my pre-vaccination check sheet.
A3. It can be reissued by the Public Health and Disease Prevention Section of the Minato Public Health Center.
Either come directly to the Minato Public Health Center on the 4th floor at 1-4-10 Mita or call 03-6400-0081.

Q4. If I can't visit the hospital or clinic between October 2017 and January 2018, is it possible to receive the flu vaccination in February or later?
A4. No, it isn't because once the deadline of January 31, 2018 listed on the pre-vaccination check sheet is exceeded, you will need to pay for your own flu vaccination.

Q5. I have not been sent the pre-vaccination check sheet.
A5. The pre-vaccination check sheet was sent to current registered residents of Minato City on September 1, 2017. Those eligible for the flu vaccination who moved to Minato City after that date, and those whose current residence is different from their resident registration, should contact the Public Health and Disease Prevention Section of the Minato Public Health Center above.

Q6. Should the flu vaccination be received every year?
A6. Yes, you get your vaccination every year in order to maintain adequate immunity. Research has suggested that the seasonal influenza vaccine is effective over a period from two weeks after the vaccination until approximately five months later.
Furthermore, the influenza vaccine is manufactured specifically for the virus expected to spread during that season.

Q7. When should the vaccination be received?
A7. In Japan, influenza typically spreads each year between December and March. Furthermore, as the period during which the vaccine can remain effective is from two weeks after vaccination until five months later, the vaccination should be received no later than the middle of December.
