Child Allowance & Child Support Allowance

The following information is about Jido Teate, or Child Allowance, and the Jido Ikusei Teate, or Child Support Allowance, benefits and requirements needed to receive them.

Child Allowance, Jido Teate

Eligibility

Child Allowance is provided for people who are raising a child until the first March 31 after the child’s 15th birthday. A child up to the third year of junior high school who live in Japan between April 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019 is eligible.

Under three years old

¥15,000 per child/month

Over 3 years old to final year of elementary school age

¥10,000 per child/month
¥15,000 for the third and subsequent children

Junior high school student

¥10,000 per child/month

Families exceeding the minimal income limit

¥5,000 per child/month

Note

  • If the child is living in a facility, for example an infant home, or is in the care of a foster parent, the application procedures should be completed by the head of the facility or the foster parent.
  • If the father and mother live separately due to divorce negotiations, the parent living with the child shall be the priority recipient of child allowances.
  • If the father and mother live overseas, the person bringing up the child in Japan shall be provided with the child allowances, when such persons are appointed by the father and mother.
  • In principle, child allowances are provided for the benefit of children living in Japan. However, if a child lives abroad for the purpose of overseas studies, he/she shall be eligible only if certain requirements are met, such as if the child does not live with his/her father or mother.

Child Support Allowance, Jido Ikusei Teate

There are two types of allowances: Child Support Allowances for Single Parents and Child Support Allowances for Children with Disabilities

Child Support Allowance for single parents

¥13,500 per child/month

Eligibility

Child Support Allowance is provided for people who are nurturing a child until the first March 31 after the child’s 18th birthday who meet any of the following conditions.

  • Parents/guardians are officially divorced
  • A child’s mother or father is deceased
  • A child’s mother or father is severely disabled: Shintai Shogaisha Techo, Certificate of the Physically Disabled, Level 1 or 2
  • A child’s mother or father’s life or death is unknown
  • A child who has been abandoned by his/her mother or father for one or more years
  • A child’s mother or father was issued a protective order from a court
  • A child’s mother or father is detained for one or more years
  • The mother conceived the child out of wedlock, including common law and de facto marriages

Note

Not eligible if the child is living in a facility, including an infant home.

Child Support Allowance for children with disabilities

¥15,500 per child/month

Eligibility

Residents raising a child aged 19 years old and under who meet any of the following conditions.

  • A child with Ai-no-Techo, Certificate of the Intellectually Disabled, level 1 through 3
  • A child with Shintai Shogaisha Techo, Certificate of the Physically Disabled, Level 1 or 2
  • A child suffering from cerebral palsy or progressive muscular atrophy

Notification of Current State Report

Residents currently receiving Child Allowances, or Child Support Allowances are required to submit a Genkyo Todoke, Current State Report, to update their eligibility status. Minato City will send the relevant materials in early June. Please send all forms and documents via postal mail to Children’s Benefit Subsection, Minato City Hall, 105-8511 by June 30. If you are submitting directly, please bring documents at the Health and Walfare Subsection of any Regional City Office by June 29. Recipients who fail to submit all forms by the abovementioned deadline will no longer be able to receive the allowances. If documents were submitted after their due dates, benefit payments will be transferred to the designated bank accounts after November.
