Spring National Traffic Safety Campaign

Aiming to make Tokyo the safest city in the world

May 20 is the Traffic Accident Elimination Day and May 11 to 20 is the Spring National Traffic Safety Campaign week. There were 1,219 traffic accidents in the year 2018, a decrease of 42 accidents from the year 2017. Please obey traffic rules and manners to reduce traffic accidents.

Campaign Activities

  1. Preventing traffic accidents and maintaining the safety of children and senior citizens.
  2. Promoting safe rides for cyclists.
    a) Pedal along the carriageway. Pedal on sidewalks only in exceptional circumstances.
    b) Ride on the left side of the road.
    c) Pedestrians always have the priority on sidewalks. Cyclists must go slowly and take the carriageway side.
    d) Following safety rules:
Riding a bicycle while drinking alcohol, riding with a passenger, and cycling in parallel are forbidden. Turn on the bicycle’s front light at night.
Obey traffic light signals, stop and confirm the safety in all directions before entering the intersections.
    e) Children must wear a bicycle helmet.
  3. Enforce seat belt fastening and proper use of child seats.
  4. Elimination of drunk driving.
  5. Prevention of two-wheel vehicle accidents.

Note

There are many hills in Minato City. When descending a hill, you will accelerate much more than riding on a flat road. Please reduce speed adequately and confirm safety when descending a hill. It is very dangerous when cyclists collide with pedestrians by not slowing down on the road, and not looking out carefully for the pedestrians. These actions could lead to a serious accident. The perpetrator may be asked to compensate for the harm he/she has caused to the victim or the injured.
