New Year’s Greetings from the Mayor

Masaaki Takei

As the Mayor of Minato City, I would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous New Year.
Last year, Japan achieved enormous success in sport. In the first Rugby World Cup held in Japan, Japan’s national team became the first team from Asia to make it to the quarter-finals of the tournament. Also, Akira Yoshino was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, because of his achievement in inventing the lithium-ion electric battery.
Last April, Minato City achieved the zero waiting list for nursery schools by increasing the capacity of private and municipal nursery facilities and nursery school personnel.
With the increase of tourists, the city implemented MINATO Flag System and the Night Time Economy to promote tourism at night and secure safety in the city. The city provided blue flags to businesses operating at night. Currently, more than 150 businesses have registered in this system.
As disaster measures, Minato City became the first city in 23 cities of Tokyo to conclude the Agreement Regarding Emergency Medical Aid During Disaster with 12 hospitals. In order to provide prompt responses during disaster, emergency medical aid stations were opened with the cooperation of hospitals.
Last December, the Minato City Ordinance for the Promotion and Understanding of Sign Language and Various Communication Methods for People with Disabilities was implemented. Through this ordinance, the city clarified the basic concept and responsibility regarding the promotion of various communication methods, in order to realize a society which people with disabiities can lead energetic lives.

By April 2020, various facilities for residents will be opened: Moto–azabu nursery school which nurtures children with disabilities and requiring medical care, Minami-azabu welfare facility which has support home for people with disabilities, Minato Science Museum, Minato City Center for Traditional Culture, and Akasaka Kids-to-Teens Aoyama Hall.
Also, the city will clarify ordinance in preparation for the implementation of Minato Marriage system. This is a system which everyone can live together with the people who they wish to live as their family, regardless of sexual orientation or sexual identity.
In this March, the new Minato City Basic Plan will be implemented. By incorporating public opinion collected from our residents, the plan will be designed to create a city filled with vitality and safety.
This year, the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo will be conducted. The Olympic and Paralympic torch will be passed through Minato City. During the Tokyo 2020 Games, Odaiba Seaside Park will be used as a venue for triathlon competitions. By making Odaiba beach swimmable with the improvement of water quality, Minato City aims to pass on Odaiba beach as a legacy venue for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The population of Minato City rose to above 260,000 last September. The population continues to grow and is expected to reach 300,000 by 2027. Even more, the city will enhance cooperation with our residents, companies, and organizations to respond swiftly to various demands.
We will dedicate all our power to realize communities, where all residents can live in safety and comfort.

We hope this year will be full of happiness and cheer for all of you.
