Hakata Ningyo
Hakata is a city in the southern Japanese island called Kyushu. Hakata ningyo is a doll made from unglazed porcelain and one of the most famous crafts in this area.
Hakata ningyo’s root emerged when Lord Nagamasa Kuroda came to Hakata in 1600. He summoned many artists and craftsmen, and they created ceramic dolls. At the Universal Exposition in Paris, Hakata ningyo received international recognition.
There are many kinds of Hakata ningyo, but probably the most typical one is the beautiful lady wearing kimono. Although the history of Hakata ningyo dates back to 400 years ago, it still remains as an ideal beauty for many people.
