Introducing Traditional Arts and Crafts

Edo Sashimono
Edo sashimono is a wooden furniture made by jointing wooden pieces together. There are drawers, desks, mirrors, and more. Sashimono refers to monosashi, a ruler in Japanese, which is used to precisely measure timber materials in order to make wooden furniture.
In the production process, you can see the craftsman’s Iki, an aesthetic to create sophisticated and stylish product. Instead of using nails, hidden notches and grooves are carved inside to joint wooden pieces together. Also, high quality timber materials such as zelkova, cypress, and mulberry are used and coated with lacquer to show the beauty of the wooden furniture.
