On March 29, Japan began operation of new flight paths to expand the capacity of aircraft arrivals and departures at Haneda Airport, as part of its efforts to enhance the airport’s functions for the smooth hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to strengthen international competitiveness in the future.
Currently, a maximum of about 30 flights per hour fly over Minato City only during about three hours between 3 and 7 p.m. when there is a southerly wind.
In response to receiving many concerns from the people of Minato City about noise, falling objects, etc., Minato City is conducting its own noise measurement surveys, providing resident’s opinion to the government, and requesting the government to implement noise countermeasures, safety measures, efforts to avoid making permanent, and explanatory meetings for residents.
Based on the requests from the local governments and communities concerned, the national government is conducting consideration on implementing noise countermeasures, noise surveys, measures against falling objects, and avoiding making permanent.
