Beware of Rubella
Rubella is an infectious disease caused by the rubella virus. Symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes around neck. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets, such as from coughing or by touching your mouth or nose after contact with contaminated surfaces.
If a woman contracts rubella during early pregnancy, there is a risk that the baby will be born with Congenital Rubella Syndrome, which can cause hearing loss, cataracts, and congenital heart defects.
The city provides the following rubella prevention measures for residents:
- Subsidized rubella antibody testing and vaccination for adults
- Subsidized measles-rubella combination vaccinations
- Additional rubella countermeasures including antibody testing and the 5th routine vaccination
