Using Childcare (Nursery Schools)

Nursery Schools

Minato City has established nursery schools that care for children whose guardians cannot care for them at home during the day because of work or illness.

Apply for enrollment at: Health and Welfare Subsection, Residents Support Section, each Regional City Office

Application forms are distributed by the Health and Welfare Subsection, Residents Support Section of each Regional City Office, and all municipal nursery schools. They can also be downloaded from the Minato City Website. You can also apply online.

Childcare fee
Childcare fees are determined based on the guardian’s resident tax (in the previous fiscal year in the case of April to August), the quantity of childcare required, and the child’s class age. The second and younger child whose older brother or sister in the same household is enrolled in a nursery school can attend the same nursery school without paying childcare and school lunch fees.

* If the child does not meet the enrollment criteria or if there are no vacancies, guardians may not be able to enroll the child. For details, contact Health and Welfare Subsection, Residents Support Section, Regional City Office.

Nursery School Hours and Extended Care

Municipal nursery schools operate from 7:15 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. Some nursery schools have different opening hours. We determine the nursery hours in consideration of the situation of guardians within the range of the opening hours. In addition, all nursery schools in Minato City provide extended care.

Minato City Provisional Nursing Facilities

Minato City provisional nursing facilities are established by Minato City to eliminate the waiting list for nursery schools. The provisional nursing facilities do not operate under a license. However, the same user adjustment criteria as licensed nursery schools, which determine the need for childcare, are applied for allowing enrollment. Childcare fees, school lunch fees, and the contents of childcare are comparable with licensed nursery schools.

Small-scale Childcare Services

Small-scale facilities are established to care for children between zero and two years of age whose guardians cannot care for them at home for reasons such as work.

Shibaura Island Children’s Garden (Kodomo-en)

This children’s garden is a facility that serves an early childhood education and care function equivalent to that provided by nursery schools or kindergartens. It provides care and education for zero-year-old infants to preschool-age children. Applications for admission are screened in accordance with the requirements for licensed nursery schools. Children aged 4 and 5 are entitled to day care regardless of whether their guardians are employed or not.
