Daily Earthquake Precautions

Preparing for a large earthquake

  1. Secure furniture. Take measures to prevent glasses from shattering.
  2. You may get injured by glass shards. Prepare slippers or other protective footwear.
  3. Please prepare 7 days' worth of drinking water and food so you are able to carry out home evacuation.
*Things to take with you when you go to an evacuation shelter.
Items important to you Cash, your bankbooks, a copy of health insurance card, personal seal, passport, driver's license, residence card
Commodities Underwear, clothing, towels, tissues, wet wipes, garbage bags, lighters, gloves, glasses/contact lenses, sanitary products
Others Flashlight, portable radio, extra batteries, medicines
  4. Confirm the routes to your nearest Evacuation Areas and Evacuation Shelters.
  5. Discuss how your family members will get in touch with one another if you are apart when a disaster strikes and identify a meeting place in case telephone service is not available.
  6. Participate in the disaster prevention drills organized by Minato City. In the event of a disaster, cooperate with other members in your community and help each other.

Earthquake Precautions for High-Rise Buildings

  1. It takes some time for electricity, gas, and water supplies to be restored after a disaster. Prepare a seven-day supply of drinking water and food, as well as an emergency toilet and other daily essentials.
  2. The earthquake tremors will be more amplified in a high-rise building than in a single-family home. Secure furniture to prevent it from tipping over. Also, take through measures to prevent glass fragments from scattering if glass breaks.
  3. When an earthquake occurs, do not use the elevator to evacuate. In the event of a major earthquake, some elevators will automatically stop at the nearest floor, but a power outage may cause the elevator to stop immediately. If you are trapped in an elevator, press the emergency button to request rescue.
  4. In residential complexes, such as apartment buildings, it is necessary to help each other on each floor or a set of several floors in the case of an earthquake. For the entire apartment building to be prepared for disasters, you should communicate with your neighbors through daily greetings and conversations.
