Sengaku-ji Temple

Sengaku-ji Temple is known as the final resting place of Ako gishi (warriors). Next to Sengaku-ji Temple, there is the Ako Gishi Memorial Hall, which displays valuable artifacts related to Ako gishi. On December 14 of every year, the Ako Gishi Festival is held. On that day, many people come to visit the graveyard and pay their respects with incense. A highlight of the festival is the gishi gyoretsu procession. The participants are dressed as Ako gishi and parade around the temple grounds.

Institute of Nature Study, National Museum of Nature and Science

Its large grounds include forested areas, a meadow, ponds, and swamps. It is so rich in nature, that one normally does not expect to find it in the center of a major city. The approx. 20 ha grounds are home to approx. 1,473 species of plant life, and approx. 2,130 species of insects. A wide variety of flowers and insect life can be readily observed here any time of year.

Closed: Mondays (open when Monday is a national holiday and closed on Tuesday), the day after national holidays (open when Saturday or Sunday is the day after a national holiday), and December 28 to January 4.

Admission: Adults and university students: ¥320; *Children of high school age and younger, persons 65 years old and older, and persons with disabilities and their caregivers (1 person) are admitted free of charge.

Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

This museum uses the former residence of Prince Asaka. It was built in 1933 in an art deco style that represents Japan. Henri Rapin, a prominent decorating artist, designed the interior. The building and its chandelier and relief by René Lalique is considered a work of art. The museum also has a beautiful garden.

Closed: Monday (Closed on Tuesday if this day is a national holiday.), and December 28 to January 4.

Opening hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Entrance by 5:30 p.m.)

Admission: The admission varies according to the exhibition; Garden admission: Adults: ¥200; university students: ¥160; junior high school and high school students and persons aged 65 or older: ¥100; elementary school students and younger and junior high school students residing in or attending school in Tokyo, and disabled individuals plus one caregiver: Free
