The Deadline to File and Pay Your 2025 Income Tax Return is Monday, March 16.

An income tax return is the procedure in which you calculate your income and tax amount according to your residency status for income earned during the one-year period from January 1 to December 31. You must file the return with the head of the tax office between February 16 and March 15 of the following year (or the next business day if it falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday) and settle any overpayment or underpayment by adjusting against the tax withheld at the source and any advance tax payments.

Taxpayers
Individuals are required to pay income tax according to the following residency categories:

  1. Resident: An individual who has an address in Japan, or who has continuously had a place of residence in Japan for one year or more.
  2. Nonpermanent resident: A resident who does not have Japanese nationality and whose total period of having an address or residence in Japan within the past 10 years is five years or less.
  3. Nonresident: An individual other than a resident.
