Test Your Waste Sorting Skills!
— Learn the Correct Way to Dispose of Waste —

In daily life, we sort waste almost automatically. Have you ever wondered: “Is this recyclable?” or “How should I dispose of this?”
A recent ward survey revealed that a large portion of household burnable waste actually contains recyclable resources.

How many can you get right?

❶ What kind of waste is a disposable hand warmer?

  1. Burnable waste
  2. Nonburnable waste
  3. Recyclable

Correct Answer: 2
Some municipalities collect handwarmers as burnable waste, so it’s easy to mistake.

❷ What kind of waste is a spray can with leftover contents?

  1. Puncture the can and dispose of it as nonburnable waste.
  2. Separate it from other nonburnable waste, write “Danger” on the bag, and dispose of it as nonburnable waste.
  3. Spray cans cannot be collected if there are any contents remaining.

Correct Answer: 2
Even if some contents remain, spray cans will still be collected. Do not puncture the can because doing so is very dangerous.
If you are disposing of a large quantity, please contact the Minato Recycling and Waste Management Office.

❸ What kind of waste is a plastic hanger with a metal hook?

  1. Burnable waste
  2. Nonburnable waste
  3. Recyclable plastic

Correct Answer: 3
Plastic hangers are collected as recyclable plastic, even with the metal hook still attached.

❹ How many of the following are collected as used paper?

  1. Toilet paper rolls
  2. Paper bags
  3. Used memo paper

Correct answer: All three! (They are all recyclable paper!)
Are you throwing them away as burnable waste? Sort and recycle them instead. You can place them in a paper bag (without tying them with string) or tuck them inside magazines for collection.

❺ How should you dispose of a mobile battery?

  1. Dispose of it as burnable waste
  2. Dispose of it as nonburnable waste (separate it from other nonburnable items).
  3. Take it to a collection box installed in the ward by an industry organization.

Correct answer: 2 and 3
Many small electronic devices, including mobile batteries, contain lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. When excessive force is applied externally, they can overheat or ignite, posing a serious danger.
Fires have occurred in garbage trucks and processing facilities because these batteries have been mixed with burnable waste.
When disposing of mobile batteries, take them to a collection box located within the ward, or on the designated nonburnable waste day (twice a month), insulate the battery terminals with vinyl or cellophane tape, separate them from other nonburnable waste, place them in a semi-transparent bag, and bring them to the collection point.
